Shandong scored the winner late on to snatch a dramatic 2-1 victory over Shenyang in the final round of the Chinese Super League (CSL) at the Guangzhou Evergrande's home ground yesterday.

The result means Shandong have won their first CSL title since 2014 and will join the likes of Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing as one of China's biggest clubs.

With just two minutes left on the clock, substitute Zhang Yufeng found the net from close range after a well-worked move involving Zhang Guoan and Sun Xianghui.

It was a moment that had fans on their feet in the stands and the players on the pitch were celebrating wildly as they ran onto the pitch.

"Everyone has worked hard all season," said Shandong coach Zhang Jikang. "We didn't expect to win the league this year."

"It was a great feeling for me to lift the championship trophy with my team-mates," added Zhang Yufeng, who also scored the winning goal.

Shenyang coach Li Hongwei admitted he could not believe what had happened.

"I am very disappointed because we have worked so hard this season but it was not enough to take the title," he said.

"The result is very disappointing for our team but I still have hope for next year."
